Lakshapana Falls

Lakshapana is the 8th highest fall in Sri Lanka. It is 126 m (413 ft.) in height and 23 m (75 ft.) in length. This waterfall is categorized as a plunge type falls. It can be graded as the 625th highest waterfall in the world as well. Though this waterfall is not the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, you will see that Lakshapana falls is as famous as the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. This fall has been printed on the RS. 100 notes as well.
The story behind the name
Lakshapana Falls has got this name in recent time. There is a twisted story behind the name. The name has derived from the meaning of Laksha Pahana. Laksha is a hundred thousand in the native language. Pahana means Lamp. The entire name is described as one lakh of lamps. Lakshapana falls has been used to generate electricity in Sri Lanka. The water of the falls is sent through the turbines to generate electricity as Sri Lanka is a country that depend their electricity needs mostly on the water. Another story says this falls got its name because of a lakh of rocks.
Folks say
This fall is popular among the people of Sri Lanka as the majority of the population is Buddhists. Legends say that Lord Buddha mended his sacred saffron robe in this area when he was visiting the Sri Padaya. This story has made this falls a sacred place among Buddhists.
How to get there
Lakshapana waterfall is another beauty in the Maskeliya region. Maskeliya is a city in the Nuwara Eliya district. Lakshapana falls belongs to Central province where there is the highest elevation from the sea level on all island. If you wish to visit this beauty, you will pass Malabe, Avissawella, Ruwanwella, Kitulgala, Ginigathhena and then get to Norton Bridge if you hope to get here from Colombo. Then you have to get to Makeliya town. Though you didn’t start your journey from Colombo, you should get to one of the cities above. As it is the safest and the most convenient way to visit this falls even though you are a tourist or a Sri Lankan. You will find Lakshapana falls in a village called Kiriwan Eliya. Kiriwan Eliya village is situated on Maskeliya-Norton Bridge road. You should travel about 16Km to reach this waterfall.
