Sri Lanka has been a country where travel and tourism were defined in various depths. When it comes to the present, things have been a bit unclear for that travelers. Sri Lanka is going through one of the darkest financial crises and things have been hard for the citizens. As a traveler, you need to know specific matters about Sri Lanka before visiting. This article will explain those things.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka

It is not a secret that Sri Lanka has an economic crisis at present. After taking independence in 1948, the country had to face severe troubles. The money had to be pumped to wear, and there were two failed attempts to get the power by the youth. Although there was corruption in the country already, it was not a huge matter until 2009. Sri Lanka could get rid of the terrorism in 2009 and put a stop to the unnecessary funding to buy battling equipment. But, the existing government kept funding the development projects which did not have a return on investment. Along with the corruption, Sri Lanka sank into debt.

The pandemic situation from 2020 to 2022 accelerated it. At present, Sri Lanka is suffering its peak and there are queues on roads to acquire limited resources such as fuel, medical, and other basic needs. Not having enough money transfers from foreign employees, having to pay the debt installments, and the global economic crisis have aided the crisis in Sri Lanka adversely. The instability over the politics has intensified the situation as well.

Protests in Sri Lanka Galle face protest

Due to the recent queues caused by the economic crisis, there are people on the roads. Protesting against such unwanted situations has been a daily habit in Sri Lanka. What they use more often are roads and similar locations where they can grab attention. The Galle fort was such a place found by the protesters as they can easily get the attention of the country as well as the world. It was the government that lead the path.

    Gotago Village - Colombo

People started a queue in Galle to get domestic Gas cylinders and the queue was located right outside the Galle international cricket stadium. Although other customers could not get gas until now, the government took necessary measures to provide Gas cylinders to the queue in Galle. After the second test between Sri Lanka Vs Australia started, people started the protests as they thought they would get attention. Not only they get the attention, but the Government was scared. Although the Government sent an army to remove them, it did not work. Even at present, there are protesters on Galle Dutch fort.

Can I find fuel to travel around Sri Lanka?

One of the hardest things to do in Sri Lanka is to find fuel. As previously mentioned, there is a shortage of some supplies in Sri Lanka and fuel is among them. After finding out that there is a broken fuel supply to Sri Lanka and the available ships to deliver fuel to Sri Lanka are none, the black market tried to find and store them in their yards. According to the stats of the Sri Lankan Police, they have found more than 50,000 fuels from the black market within the last couple of months. The public panic has also been a reason to not have fuel in the sheds. People try to collect fuel at their homes and those who got delayed to sheds have happened to face the fuel shortage.

Does the public transportation in operation

The fuel shortage has affected transportation as the first thing. When it comes to public transportation, it is not working effectively either. The economic crisis has resulted in increasing the fuel price and it can be considered a fluctuation as well. The cost of transportation services has increased rapidly due to that. Along with all those reasons, public bus transportation has been limited down to 10%.  But, as a traveler, you may experience a bit of convenience from the train as almost 505 trains are functioning. But, the train cars are at their full capacity nowadays.

Are the protestors harming the tourists?

There has not been any incident regarding protesters harming the tourists. Although there have been some violent protesting occasions against the government, both the government and the protesters have been cautious not to harm the tourists. As a tourist, you may have to use public transportation as well as bicycles to travel from one place to another, but there will not be violence you need to be afraid to.
