First Underwater Museum Opens in Sri Lanka
Galle was the town that took the honor of hosting the first underwater museum in Sri Lanka. Galle is accepted to have one of the stunning shores in the island without any doubt.Â
The guidance of Sri Lankan Navy
The supervision and the commencement have been committed by Sri Lanka navy regarding this project. The opening ceremony was held with the participation of Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva off the shores. Many advantages can be obtained by this project such as improving natural bio-diversity, promoting tourism, increasing tourist activities, getting the full use of the safe zone, decrease sea erosion, and encouraging the surfing events.
The Concept
There have been several concepts regarding this project and the way towards its success. First, it had been suggested to use removed train compartments as the key features of this underwater museum. It had been a bit difficult effort to find them as there had not been enough compartments in the country. Then Sri Lanka Navy had taken a different path of creating artefacts and sculptures by themselves.
An underwater area that has spread across 50ft in Galle harbor has been used effectively for this project. The themes that have been used for beautifying this underwater museum is not a specific one. If you give it a try to visit the museum, you will get it in an open mind. There are statues of mermaids, ancient Greek warriors, artifacts of ancient Egypt, Moonstones from ancient Sri Lanka, and some artifacts regarding naval activities. The project was continuously being conducted using concrete sculptures. After the build of the sculptures, they were deposited in the ocean using machines.
It is expected that the beauty of this natural harbor will be improved with this museum along with the marine creatures. Â Also, it is said that there will be several natural features around those artificial coral reefs in the future. That will be one of the most pleasant sceneries that tourists love to see in Sri Lanka. If there is someone who wishes to see the museum, he will have to make the approach through any recognized institutes.
Next Step
This is just a step consisted of 02 other steps. Sri Lanka Navy is planning to open similar underwater museum in Trincomalee and Tangalle shores. It is not a secret that those places also bear mind-blowing marine attractions in the island. If this project goes according to the plan, those future plans will be tributes to the country indeed.
