St. Clair’s Falls is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Sri Lanka when it was flowing in full flow. The falls is situated in Thalawakelle small town in the Nuwara Eliya district.

St. Clair’s Falls is one of the cascade-type waterfalls in Sri Lanka it is situated in Nuwara Eliya district which is a part of the Central Province. There are lots of waterfalls in the Nuwara Eliya district and you can keep St. Clair’s Falls name on the must-see list. There are some protests against the government because of the dam created to generate electricity from the falls water on the upper side. Anyway, there are still falls as a beauty.

St. Clair’s falls is considered one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and this fall is called the Niagara of Sri Lanka because of its broadness. St. Claire falls is one of the six waterfalls that has been affected by the Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project.  The falls are situated 3km away from the Hatton-Thalawakele road which causes a traveler to have a walk to see the falls.  Kothmale falls is running through a tea estate and it is fed by Kothmale Oya and the Mahaweli River.  These falls have got their name because of the tea estate where these falls are flowing through. There are two main parts for the falls and their names are “Maha Ella” and “Kuda Ella”.  Maha Ella alias Greater falls’ height is 80m and the Kuda ella alias Lesser falls’ height is 50m.
