Gotago Village - Colombo
#GotagoVillage #Gohomegota

Sri Lanka is famous for producing travel destinations and adding them to the bucket list each day. The latest travel attraction a tourist must add to the bucket list is the Gotagogama, a struggling spot against the ruling sector of the country.

Gotagogama is not a place that has any cultural, historical, or natural value but a place that will have a national value.  It has not passed even a month since adding this place on Google maps, but the place has become a holy and sacred place for the younger generation as well as the adults who think of a brighter future for the country.

What is Gotagogama?

Gotagogama’s meaning has come from Sinhala as well as English. Gota is a part of the Sri Lankan President’s name, Gotabhaya, and Gama means Village in the Sinhala language. The term’s meaning is “President Go Home”. Youngsters who have named it President seem to be not listening to the voice of their citizens. It contains what a typical village needs to consist of as well. A library, shops, a temporarily arranged hospital, and similar stuff are in this village.

Also, that is the main reason why they are protesting from the president’s office. It is just a 05 min tuk-tuk trip from the Colombo bus stands as well.   Since the location is updated on Google App, you will be able to find this place real quick.

Why Has This Happened?

Sri Lanka is considered one of the best tropical islands in the world along with the highest cultural, natural, and human values in its possession. A tourist gets the ability to reach the highest temperature difference within a 3-4 hour travel and that is one of the best things about the country as well. However, this amazing island still lacks being a developed country despite its natural as well as courageous population.

Sri Lankan Protests

People have been seeing the corrupted political influence in the country and experiencing their unacceptable behavior since the independence, 1948. The issue was not a critical one as people just chose the peaceful path and the corrupted politicians used various strategies such as racism, satisfactory bribery, and the use of police for their tasks. Things kept happening as there were two ruling parties who switched power from time to time.

Why All of a Sudden?

Sri Lankan culture consists of a majority of Buddhists who value inner peace. Although the economy was a poor one, Sri Lanka’s literacy, health standards, and similar socio standards were in a higher position. That is the best example to state the real situation of the Island as well. Without the acknowledgment of the population, the rulers f Sri Lanka had taken loans from China and other funds more than required. More importantly, they had expended that money on unnecessary development projects as well. The crisis was in the ashes until the Pandemic put things to the attention of the Sri Lankan public.

Then This Happened..

The ruling parties of the country were repaying the installments and they got more loans. They managed to keep the installment amounts similar to the annual income. Things changed due to covid pandemic as the income of the country went really low. Since the rulers did not have enough money to buy goods equal to the demand, there were queues in the market as well as on the roads.

Due to the increase in the Dollar’s value equaled to LKR, things got adverse as the Petrol, Diesel, and Gas prices suddenly increased. People tolerated these things somehow, and the limit was exceeded as the government conducted the electricity for up to 13 hours due to the lack of diesel. The end result was they got onto the road and protested against the government. They first went to the President’s private residency and more conflict situations arose. Finally, the youth went for the Gotagogama to show their anger and frustration.
