Great western mountain range

Great Western is one of the highest mountain peaks in Sri Lanka as well as one of the biggest mountain ranges in central hills. Which is home to many species including mountain leopards.

The great western mountain actually faces the west of the country, So maybe because of that British could have named the mountain great western. Great Western is also famous for the Great Western railway station situated underneath the giant mountain. The mountain range is situated in the central province the range boarding from Nanuoya to Pundalu oya which is in Kothmale. And many water streams starting from the mountain and famous Pundalu oya the feed source of the Dunsinane falls also starting from the Great western.

Are there Leopards in Great Western?

Great Western is one of the famous homelands of Sri Lankan leopards ( Panta panduras Kotiya ). And also home to many wildlife including samba deers. The mountain has connected to the Pidurutalagala mountain range with narrow corridors. Therefore Great western mountain range is a biodiversity hotspot.

Protected forest reserve by Forest Conservation Department

The great western mountain is a protected reserve where no one can enter the area without any permission.

Great Western is a well-known destination among Hikers in Sri Lanka. The hike takes 4-6 hours to get to the peak where you can have an amazing sight of the western side of Sri Lanka. And also the famous Adams peak can be seen very clearly from the top. And the iconic view is the top view of the great western railway station.
