The Sri Lankan flag has brought the symbolization along with its culture which dates back 2500 years. When it comes to its first adaptation, 1950 was the year when the first official flag was declared for the Dominion of Ceylon. Several changes were made to the Sri Lankan flag in 1953 and 1952 following the suggestions of well-learned.

The meaning of the symbols of Sri Lankan Flag

The maroon background is representing the Sinhalese as the major ethnic group in the country. The main and most distinguished character in the Sri Lankan flag is the golden lion. That is why the same flag is known as The Lion Flag as well.  The golden lion holding a sword in its right paw. The lion symbolizes the bravery of Sri Lanka which has been determined by its past dating back to 2500 years back. The sword held by the lion symbolizes the sovereignty of the country. Also, the Lion is created with curly hair which is also shown as Lion’s mains. As a factor that represents wisdom, meditation, and religious observance the curly hair is a component of the lion’s flag. The nose of the lion is for intelligence while the beard represents the purity of words.   In the present version of the Sri Lankan flag, two-color stripes on the beginning are available. They are green and orange in color representing Muslims and Hindus in order. The crimson color of the background has been dedicated to minor religions in the country. When it comes to the yellow border around the flag, it is for minority ethnic groups in the country.

As the majority of the people represent Buddhists, four “Bo Leaves” have been added to the corners of the flag symbolizing four great qualities a man can have. Those qualities are love, passion, equanimity, and pleasure. Before making that change, there were four spearheads on the four corners of the flag.
